How often should one undergo a DEXA bone density measurement?

Dear Doctor,

My name is Hildegard Lippert and I have some questions about DEXA bone density measurement. Several years ago, I had a measurement done because I have osteoporosis in my family and therefore an increased risk of bone fractures. The results at that time were slightly below average, but still within the normal range. However, I have not had another measurement since then and I am wondering how often I should undergo a DEXA bone density measurement.

I am concerned that my bone health may have deteriorated in recent years, as I have been experiencing increased back pain and tension lately. Additionally, I have heard that women of my age (I am 62 years old) are particularly susceptible to osteoporosis and therefore regular check-ups are important.

I would like to know if it is advisable to have a DEXA bone density measurement done annually or every few years. Are there specific risk factors or signs that indicate a need for more frequent measurements? And how can I improve or maintain my bone health myself to reduce the risk of fractures?

Thank you in advance for your help and advice.

Sincerely,
Hildegard Lippert

Dear Mrs. Lippert,

Thank you for your question regarding DEXA bone density testing and your concern about osteoporosis. As a radiologist specializing in this field, I am happy to assist you.

DEXA bone density testing is an important examination to assess bone health and estimate the risk for osteoporosis and fractures. Particularly individuals with a family history of osteoporosis should have regular screenings to detect possible changes early. In your case, since you have already had a measurement and have a slightly increased risk for osteoporosis, it is advisable to consider regular follow-up checks.

The frequency of DEXA bone density testing depends on various factors, including age, gender, family history, lifestyle, and any accompanying conditions. Generally, it is recommended that women aged 65 and above undergo a measurement every 2-3 years to detect changes in bone health early. In your case, since you have had a previous measurement and are experiencing back pain and tension, it may be beneficial to consider an annual check-up.

There are also specific risk factors that may indicate the need for more frequent testing, such as a previous diagnosis of osteoporosis, long-term use of certain medications, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, inadequate exercise, and an unhealthy diet. If one or more of these risk factors apply to you, closer monitoring may be necessary.

To improve or maintain your bone health, there are several measures you can take. These include a balanced diet with sufficient intake of calcium and vitamin D, regular physical activity, especially weight-bearing exercises, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and adequate sun exposure for vitamin D production.

I hope this information has been helpful to you. If you have any further questions or would like additional advice, I am available to assist you.
