How can I relieve my allergy symptoms in the nose?

Dear Doctor,

my name is Heike Helbig and I have been suffering from severe allergy symptoms in my nose for some time. I constantly have a blocked nose, sneezing fits, itching, and a general feeling of discomfort. These symptoms significantly affect my quality of life and I am desperate to find ways to relieve them.

I have already tried various measures, such as avoiding allergens, regularly cleaning my nasal passages with saline solution, and taking antihistamines. Unfortunately, these measures have not been successful so far, and I continue to be plagued by my allergy symptoms.

I am very concerned that my allergy symptoms could lead to long-term complications or that I may develop chronic sinusitis. Therefore, I would like to know from you what further treatment options are available to effectively alleviate my allergy symptoms in the nose. Are there any specific medications, nasal sprays, or other therapies that you would recommend as an ear, nose, and throat specialist?

I would greatly appreciate your expert assessment and recommendations so that I can finally successfully treat my allergy symptoms in the nose. Thank you in advance for your help!

Kind regards,

Heike Helbig

Dear Mrs. Helbig,

Thank you for your detailed description of your allergy symptoms in the nose. I am sorry to hear that you are suffering so much from these symptoms and have not yet found satisfactory relief. Allergic rhinitis, an allergic inflammation of the nasal mucosa, can indeed be very burdensome and significantly affect quality of life.

It is good that you have already tried various measures to alleviate your symptoms, such as avoiding allergy triggers, cleansing the nasal cavity with saline solution, and taking antihistamines. Unfortunately, this does not always help all patients, and in some cases, further treatment is necessary.

In your case, it may be worth considering specific medications that target the allergic inflammation in the nose. These are often corticosteroid nasal sprays that inhibit inflammation and can therefore alleviate symptoms such as nasal congestion, sneezing, and itching. These nasal sprays need to be used regularly to achieve their full effect. It is important to consult with a doctor to find the right medication and dosage for you.

Furthermore, there is also the option of immunotherapy, also known as desensitization, in which the body is slowly accustomed to the allergen to prevent an overreaction of the immune system. This form of therapy can be very effective for certain types of allergies, but it requires time and patience as it needs to be carried out over a longer period of time.

Additionally, other therapies such as acupuncture or specific breathing techniques may also be considered to alleviate symptoms. It is important to discuss all your previous measures and treatments with your treating physician to together find the best treatment option for you.

Please seek an appointment with an ear, nose, and throat specialist as soon as possible to receive a precise diagnosis of your allergy symptoms and develop an individualized treatment strategy. I wish you all the best and hope that you will soon find effective relief from your symptoms.

Sincerely,

Jessica Jung
