stomach acid

Hello, my husband has had diarrhea since Monday, now I have also caught it on Thursday, had to vomit once, diarrhea is almost gone, since yesterday my esophagus has been burning, I have to clear my throat and my voice is hoarse, when I eat it gets really bad with pressure in my stomach. Since I had bronchitis before and had to swallow a lot of stuff, I think my stomach is now rebelling. What can I do? I still have Pantoprazole 20mg in the cupboard. My husband has no complaints except for the diarrhea, since it has become bloody today and very watery, is a stool sample advisable?

Dr. med. Frauke Gehring

Good day,

It is very likely that the stomach or esophagus are a bit inflamed. Pantoprazole would be an appropriate medication, but it is only effective if taken on an empty stomach. If you have not eaten in at least four hours, you can take it and then the next dose 30 minutes before breakfast. Do this for about a week, and if there is no improvement, you should call your general practitioner.

Of course, a stool examination would be advisable for your husband.

All the best!

Sincerely, Dr. Gehring
